The United States of America is a federal republic consisting of 50 states, a federal district (Washington, D.C.), and several territories. It is located primarily in North America, and shares borders with Canada to the north and Mexico to the south. The country is one of the largest in the world by land area, and has a diverse geography that includes mountains, forests, plains, and deserts.

The United States was founded in 1776, when the thirteen British colonies in North America declared their independence from Great Britain. Since then, the country has grown to become one of the world's leading economic and military powers, with a population of over 330 million people.

The U.S. is a democracy with a system of government based on a written constitution that sets out the powers and responsibilities of the federal government and the states. The federal government is divided into three branches: the executive branch, which is headed by the President; the legislative branch, which consists of the Senate and the House of Representatives; and the judicial branch, which is headed by the Supreme Court.

The United States is also known for its cultural diversity, and is home to people of many different ethnicities and religions. The country has a rich history and is a popular tourist destination, with attractions ranging from natural wonders such as the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone National Park, to iconic landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty and the Golden Gate Bride
